Adjunctive therapy refers to a treatment used in addition to a primary therapy to enhance its effectiveness. While it is not the main intervention, it plays a supportive role in improving the primary treatment's outcomes. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) adjunctive therapy involves using EMDR as a complementary treatment alongside a client's existing therapeutic relationship or primary modality. What adjunctive EMDR therapy means EMDR does not replace the client’s primary therapist; instead, it targets specific trauma-related issues that may be “stuck” or unresolved. The EMDR therapist collaborates with the referring clinician to ensure continuity of care and emotional safety. This approach is beneficial when a client is making progress in talk therapy but needs a trauma-focused intervention to overcome certain barriers. How it works in practice The referring therapist continues to provide regular sessions focused on broader goals (e.g., relationship patterns, coping strategies). Meanwhile, the EMDR therapist concentrates on desensitizing and reprocessing traumatic memories, typically over a short series of sessions. After the EMDR treatment, the client returns to their primary therapist with new insights, reduced distress, and greater emotional capacity. Benefits of adjunctive EMDR • Targets trauma efficiently without disrupting the core therapeutic relationship. • Offers relief for clients who feel "stuck" in traditional talk therapy. • Encourages collaboration between professionals, enhancing overall care. Access to adjunctive EMDR therapy As a certified EMDR therapist, I provide several options for my clients: • Anyone can access this service individually, provided they have been referred by their current therapist. • A mental health professional can make a referral to this service using a specific form. • ACC-registered therapists can access adjunctive EMDR therapy through ACC and receive up to 20 hours of treatment for their clients.
